Does Lord Lester’s defamation bill go far enough; and do his propositions make for workable libel laws? Panellists and speakers addressed a wide array of issues at yesterday’s Reframing Libel event at City University London.
As my colleagues Oliver O’Callaghan and Natalie Peck and I have reported for the Inforrm blog, there was disagreement on the shape reform should take, but there was general agreement that it was necessary and would solve many, though not all, of the libel law problems.
This was due to the fact that the cost of financing a libel case was at the heart of the so-called “chilling effect”, a theory to which a number of speakers referred.
- Paper extracts, video and presentations will be added to the Reframing Libel site soon
